Editor's Note
Welcome to Equine Leadership's Ninth Edition. This year a herd of wild horses suggested the theme. It took a while to recognize what they were trying to communicate, but it became very clear once I simply listened. The theme: Explore the Herd in the Open Field, and how that translates into wisdom for humanity. I asked each author to consider this and write as they were guided by their hearts and share the potential for positive change when humanity embraces the collective wisdom of the herd. Reflect on the horse~human relationship and when it is offered, from the heart, for the heart and because of the heart.
As I read each article, I began to see connections, words and wisdom from both individuals and the collective, from both humans and horses. Each author wrote from their perspective, yet those synchronicities arose, the words: invitation, wildness, weaving and love, just to name a few. I hope your heart feels the space between the words. This edition is about articulating a feeling. It is about exploring that sense of wonder. It is about the heart. I hope you hear the invitation from the herd.
Our 9th edition starts with Weathering the Storm by Taylor Beckett in which a group of women find connection during a heavy rainstorm. In a time of isolation, the horses teach them about the healing powers of community. Next, Debbie La-Haye shares beautiful and intimate stories of finding gold in the horse~human relationship in Treasure Hunt. Greta Matos then offers an invitation to consider the choices we have in changing our individual and collective stories. She heads to nature and her herd in Reawakening our Peaceful Nature. In The Legendary Horses of Sable Island, Jackie Ladouceur recounts her time with the majestic horses on this magical island that holds timeless secrets of life’s mysteries. Four Horses Two Women by Kathy Moffatt tells of the bond between two horses in the spirit world, two horses on a journey to a new home and two women miraculously connected by these equine pairs. Simplification and Love articulates something that when embraced can elevate the human condition. Kelly Smith Jones shares how horses can be a beacon in the storm and guide us on our journey home. Weaving New Maps shares the connection we have with horses across the realms. Cal Burrow weaves a story of relationship, healing and deep transformation with the herd. Eleni Argy in Free and Wild offers a story of the meeting of two parallel journeys, that of a survivor of modern slavery and the other of a herd of formerly Australian Brumbies who were given new hope on a 700-acre farm. Closing out this stellar line up, we have There is a Field, I’ll Meet You There by yours truly. The famous poem by Rumi joins us as we head to the field to explore what we will find with the gentle herd that will meet us there. Each article and each author, in their own way and together, have created a space for humanity to open their hearts and welcome a more peaceful and positive future for all.
Our vision at Equine Leadership has always rested in the belief that horses, living as close to nature as possible, can provide a paradigm of living that is clear, authentic and heart-based. Our goal is to make the horse~human connection accessible to all.
Thank YOU, dear reader, for hearing the invitation of the herd. I hope you don’t just read but feel these articles and the messages within them. My deepest gratitude to the authors and the horses. And to our editor, Pat Hutchinson, we thank you! To those who assisted with formatting, modelling, listening and sharing, we thank you! We can envision a better world when we share the herd’s wisdom for humanity.
From my heart to yours,
